Join the S2He Lab
The S2He Lab welcomes undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and research staff who are interested in multimodal sensing, digital mental health, human-centered AI, and related areas. If our work sounds like a fit, we would love to hear from you.
Please email Prof. Barnes at lb3dp@virginia.edu with your CV and a brief description of your research interests.
What We Look For in a Student
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Interest in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of engineering, health, and AI
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Curiosity and willingness to learn new methods and tools
Undergraduate Researchers
UVA undergraduates are an important part of the S2He Lab, and prior research experience is not required. We look for students who are genuinely interested in our research, curious, motivated to learn, and willing to take ownership of their work. Students should be prepared to commit consistent time to a project and to work both independently and collaboratively with graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty.
Undergraduate researchers contribute to ongoing projects in areas such as mobile and wearable sensing, human-centered AI, digital health, data analysis, and system development. Opportunities vary by project and may involve data collection, prototyping, software development, data analysis, or other aspects of the research process.
Students may initially join the lab for academic credit or as volunteer researchers. As students gain experience and take on greater responsibility, paid research opportunities may also become available, depending on project needs and funding.
If you are interested in joining, reach out with a brief description of what aspects of our work interest you, what you hope to learn, and any relevant skills or experiences you would bring to a project.
